Data Harvesting
What is Data Harvesting?
Every time we use the internet, we leave behind information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, location data, browsing activity and social media interactions. Data Harvesting occurs when this information is systematically collected from websites, applications, social media platforms or other digital sources. While data collection can have legitimate purposes, criminals can also gather information to target individuals or organizations.
Attackers may collect publicly available information from social media, use malicious websites or applications, send phishing messages, or exploit compromised accounts and databases. Individually, pieces of information may seem harmless, but when combined, they can create a detailed profile of a person. This information can then be used for identity theft, targeted scams, phishing attacks or other forms of social engineering.
You can reduce the amount of information available to attackers by limiting what you share online and reviewing the privacy settings of your social media accounts and applications. Avoid providing unnecessary personal information, be careful about unknown websites and forms, and regularly review which applications have access to your data. The less unnecessary information you leave exposed, the harder it becomes to build a complete picture of you.
