What is a Fake Update Attack?

Fake Update attacks use realistic-looking pop-ups, notifications or web pages to convince users that their browser, operating system, media player or another application is out of date. The message may warn that an urgent update is required to continue using the service, creating a sense of urgency that encourages the user to click without checking the source.

Instead of installing a legitimate update, the downloaded file may contain malware. Depending on the attack, this software could steal passwords and personal information, monitor activity, damage files or give attackers unauthorized access to the device. Fake update pages are often encountered while browsing compromised or malicious websites, where the warning is designed to look like a genuine system notification.

The best way to stay safe is to install updates only through the official settings or websites of your operating system and applications. Do not download updates from unexpected pop-ups or unfamiliar links, even if the message looks convincing.
