What is an Evil Twin Attack?

An Evil Twin attack is a type of cyberattack in which an attacker creates a fraudulent Wi-Fi network designed to look like a legitimate one. The fake network may use a familiar name such as an airport, hotel, café or public Wi-Fi service, making it difficult for users to recognize that they are connecting to a malicious network.

Once a victim connects, the attacker may be able to monitor or manipulate their internet traffic. Depending on the security of the connection and the services being used, sensitive information such as login credentials, personal details or other data may be exposed. Attackers can also use the fake network to direct users to fraudulent websites or phishing pages.

You can reduce the risk by checking the exact name of a public Wi-Fi network before connecting and asking staff for the official network details when possible. Avoid entering sensitive information while connected to unknown public networks, turn off automatic Wi-Fi connections, and use mobile data when you are unsure. Staying alert before connecting can prevent a simple Wi-Fi connection from becoming a security risk.
