What is Juice Jacking?

USB connections are designed not only to charge devices but also to transfer data. Juice Jacking takes advantage of this feature by using a compromised charging station, USB port or cable to establish an unwanted data connection with a device. The user may simply think they are charging their phone, while the connection could potentially expose their data or introduce malicious software.

This type of threat can be encountered in places such as airports, hotels, cafés, shopping centres and other public areas where shared charging stations are available. Depending on the attack and the security of the device, an attacker may attempt to access personal information, install malware or otherwise compromise the device.

The safest option is to use your own charger with a regular power outlet or carry a power bank when travelling. Avoid connecting your device to unknown USB ports or cables, and never approve unexpected prompts asking to trust, connect or transfer data. A few extra seconds of caution can keep a convenient charging opportunity from becoming a security problem.
