Psychological Manipulation

What is Psychological Manipulation?

Cyberattacks do not always begin with malicious code or technical vulnerabilities. Sometimes, the weakest point is human behaviour. Attackers use psychological manipulation to influence their targets by creating emotions such as fear, urgency, curiosity, trust or excitement. The goal is to make the victim act quickly without taking the time to question what is happening.

A common example is a message claiming that your bank account will be blocked unless you verify your information immediately. Another may pretend to come from a manager, friend or family member and ask for a password, payment or verification code. Attackers often use information gathered from social media and other public sources to make these messages appear more convincing and personal.

The best defence is to slow down and question unexpected requests. Never share passwords, verification codes or sensitive information simply because someone creates a sense of urgency. Verify unusual requests through a separate, trusted channel and be cautious when a message seems designed to make you panic, rush or act emotionally. In cybersecurity, taking a moment to think can be one of your strongest defences.
