What is Juice Jacking?

Juice Jacking takes advantage of the fact that USB connections can be used for more than just charging. When you connect your phone to an unfamiliar USB port, the connection may potentially allow data to be transferred between your device and the charging station. An attacker can exploit this by modifying a public charging station or using a malicious cable to attempt to access data or compromise the connected device.

These risks are especially relevant in places such as airports, hotels, shopping centres and public transportation areas where charging stations are available to many people. A compromised connection could potentially be used to copy sensitive data, install malicious software or interfere with the device, depending on its security settings and the attacker's capabilities.

The safest approach is to use your own wall charger and plug it directly into a power outlet whenever possible. Carrying a power bank is another convenient option when travelling. Avoid using unknown USB cables or public charging ports for sensitive devices, keep your phone's operating system updated, and pay attention to any unexpected prompts asking you to allow data access when connecting to a USB device.
