What is Visual Hacking?

Visual Hacking, sometimes called shoulder surfing, is a simple but often overlooked security risk. Unlike attacks that require malicious software or technical vulnerabilities, the attacker simply observes information displayed on a screen or written on a document. This can include passwords, messages, banking details, personal information or confidential business data.

Visual Hacking can happen in many everyday situations. Someone sitting nearby on a bus or in a café may watch you enter a password, while a person standing behind you in an airport may see sensitive information on your laptop screen. Attackers may also photograph or record screens and documents without the victim noticing.

Protecting yourself starts with being aware of your surroundings. Avoid entering sensitive information where other people can easily see your screen, use a privacy screen filter when working in public, and position your device so that the display is not visible to people around you. Lock your screen whenever you leave your device unattended and avoid leaving confidential documents exposed.
